Biography

Richard “Dicky J” Johnston grew up in Central Islip, New York, in a family of eight boys and two loving, sacrificing parents.

He has been very happily married for more than 43 years to Betsy Bartlett, now Betsy Johnston, the woman he started dating in his senior year of college. He and Betsy have two daughters, Jessica, who teachers chemistry at Westminster (Missouri) College, and Mary, who is a high school English teacher in Boulder, Colorado.

Johnston worked for the Reorganization Department at Kidder-Peabody for two years before attending graduate school at Lehigh University, where he coached the Men’s Soccer Team while earning his master’s degree in business administration.

In 2017, he was inducted into the Central Islip High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Johnston was also honored with the Arthur E. Humphrey Teaching Award in 1986 at Lehigh University.

Johnston has been voted “Professor of the Year” three times by Monmouth  students, and he received the prestigious Monmouth College Hatch Teaching Award in 2009.

Johnston also served as Monmouth assistant women’s soccer coach for a decade.

Interests

Soccer, bicycling, harmonica, guitar, singing, watching Monmouth College athletes compete and perform.
