Who made an impact on you at Monmouth?
There were so many people that made an impact on me at Monmouth College. I had several professors who were extremely impactful in helping me make my final decision to go into teaching. These professors pushed me to always give my best and to lead others with love, compassion, hard work and integrity. Another impactful experience at Monmouth was joining Pi Beta Phi. I formed so many lifelong friendships by being a part of that. Through that experience I learned that there is so much more to a sorority than people think. Many people think it is all about the “party.” Yes, there were so many fun times we had, but we also did a lot of volunteering in the community as well. I loved that Pi Beta Phi and Kappa Kappa Gamma were founded in Monmouth and we would get other Pi Phi sisters from other colleges and universities that would come to visit. Our meetings at Holt House were really special to me because of the history that went along with it.
I also want to give a HUGE shoutout to Bobbi Swarts and Marybeth Kemp. These two ladies were very instrumental in my decision to come to Monmouth. They both worked in the Admissions Center and were so kind, helpful and welcoming. I admired both of them then and still do today.
What’s your favorite Monmouth tradition?
One of my favorite traditions and days at Monmouth was Scots Day. I loved how the bagpipes would walk through every dorm and wake us up early in the morning. The rest of the day was filled with fun activities for students and staff to participate in. There were so many laughs and fun that day. I love the traditions, history and culture that Monmouth provided for me. It will always hold a very special place in my heart.
Do you have any advice for the senior class?
My advice for the senior class is to always strive to do your best in whatever path in life you choose. Allow yourself room for growth and be willing to learn from your mistakes–this is where growth happens. The reality in life is that growth and comfort do not co-exist, so do not be afraid to take chances in life. The last thing is to make sure you stay true to yourself. Do not compare your journey to someone else’s. If you do that, you will miss some of the most beautiful moments in life.
