Senior Exhibition
Works by Dupont, Nelson, Roberts, Schmitz on display through April 30
A diverse collection of art by four Monmouth College seniors is on display in the Len G. Everett Gallery through April 30.
Works by Alexandra Dupont of Rock Island, Daphne Nelson of Chicago, Bailey Roberts of Sheffield, Ill., and Sam Schmitz of Elmwood Park, Ill., are on display in the gallery, which is located on the upper level of Hewes Library. A gallery reception will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. on April 30.
Dupont added an environmental science major to her art studies, and her work is a reflection of the two disciplines.
“I have climbed active volcanoes and hiked through dense forests; I have been snorkeling in coral reefs and crossed scorching deserts,” she said. “Many of my artworks are inspired by the environment. As a small child, my family would travel to southern beaches often. I became enthralled with fish, turtles and sea birds,” some of which can be seen in the exhibit.
Roberts said her art is “appropriated from real life through direct observation or from a photograph. When I draw extremely realistically, I don’t do it just for the sake of making it realistic – it is a meditative state that I achieve through the challenge of first deciding on a unique composition that will bring out the most detail, interest and contrast of the object.”
While Roberts’s art is often literal, Schmitz strives for a different result.
“I enjoy irony and like to place colors, textures and objects into spaces or situations where they are unexpected, creating surprise and intrigue,” she said. “I like to play with the way that a viewer’s eye travels through a piece and the way that each shape interacts with the others in the space.”
