Saturday of Service

Monmouth students give back to the community on Saturday of Service
  • Students Brenda Saldivar ’17 of Chicago, left, and Laura Sanchez ’19 of Bensenville, Ill., are followed by Amanda Landrey ’18 of Wonder Lake, Ill., left, and Christine Peterson ’17 of Arlington Heights, Ill. They performed yard work for Monmouth resident Ralph Butler during the College’s sixth-annual Saturday of Service.
More than 40 Monmouth College students gave up their Saturday to give back to the Monmouth community.

The students participated in the College’s sixth-annual Saturday of Service, which was held November 19.

The students worked on community-service projects at several non-profit organizations, and they also did yard work and odd jobs at the homes of area senior citizens.

The event, which was was organized by Associate Director of Student Involvement and Fraternity and Sorority Life Billy Bernard, is designed to strengthen the ties between the College and the community.

“It’s always important for us at the College to learn about the community where you are living and learn about some groups who are doing some great work in the community,” Bernard told the students before they spread out into the community.

Being part of Saturday of Service also fills out a student’s Monmouth experience, according to some of the event’s participants.

“It helps you appreciate the community a little more and understand what the community is all about,” said Brenda Saldivar ’17 of Chicago, who participated in her second Saturday of Service. “If you only restrict yourself to the campus, you limit your Monmouth experience. You get to meet more people when you do this.”

Saldivar said that participating in Saturday of Service is also a way to pay back members of the community for supporting the College.

“It is a really great experience to be part of something this big and give back to the community, especially considering that a lot of the people in the community come to our events on campus and support us as students,” she said. “It’s important for student to support the community as well.”

Meeting more members of the community is what attracted student Tiana Cintron ’18 of Chicago to participate in her first Saturday of Service.

“It’s more than just giving back to the community,” she said. “Once you you get out and meet other people in town, it helps you understand that this is your home and we should be able to help them.”

And area agencies said that Saturday of Service gives them a major boost. Warren County Youth Service Librarian Danielle Morrison had eight Monmouth students help her decorate the library for the Christmas holidays.

“When it comes to big projects like this, one person alone can be a little challenging to get everything done,” Morrison. “It usually takes me about two or three days to get everything decorated, but this should get everything done in two or three hours. This is incredible, this is very helpful. … The college has been a really great partner to collaborate with, and we really love to have the students involved with the community.”
