Trio of projects supported by successful crowdfunding campaign
The second year of crowdfunding at Monmouth College is in the books, and it was once again a success, as all three projects were fully funded.
A total of $26,964 was raised through 153 unique gifts to support the three projects – an off-campus experience in Ghana related to the Global Food Security Triad; new equipment for the Monmouth Coffee Project; and technology that will enable the College to live-stream events from the Dahl Chapel and Auditorium.

“Our crowdfunding campaign allows us to accept micro-donations toward a larger fundraising goal, creating community engagement in the process,” said Director of Alumni Engagement Hannah Maher. “We were pleased to see such a broad base of our alumni, parents and friends support the recent crowdfunding campaign. These projects bring wonderful enhancements to the student experience. It’s fantastic that we were able to fund all three.”

Associate Professor of Chemistry Brad Sturgeon said the money raised for his coffee project has already been used to purchase a two-pound coffee roaster, which will allow his team to “better serve our new and existing customers.”

“The students and I never fully thought we would ever get a two-pound roaster, but it has been ordered and will arrive shortly,” Sturgeon said. “When placing our order with Sonofresco, we talked to them about our project and they are interested in using our story as part of their marketing program.”

Sturgeon said the crowdfunding project has led to conversations with other project participants he had not anticipated, and it also helped attract two new Coffee Project clients – Seagram’s Coffee Shop and the Wildflower Natural Store, both in downtown Monmouth.

Assistant Professor of Anthropology Megan Hinrichsen is pleased that students traveling to Ghana for a study-abroad experience will have part of their costs reduced because of donations to the crowdfunding program.

“The funds we have raised will be used to pay a portion of the students’ direct costs, which strengthens our new program in Global Food Security, increases the connections Monmouth College already has with Ghana, and directly supports our students as they realize their goal to study abroad,” she said.

Like Sturgeon and Hinrichsen, the Rev. Dr. Teri Ott, the College’s chaplain, was grateful for the crowdfunding support.

“I am thrilled with the success of this crowdfunding campaign, and I want to thank all who donated,” she said. “To be able to share all the amazing events, worship services, lectures and student performances in Dahl Chapel through this new live-streaming equipment is a gift to us all.”

Monmouth’s first crowdfunding campaign was held 2015. That’s year’s campaign supported a 3-D printer for the theatre department, assisted the Chorale with its spring performance tour of Italy, and provided a multi-sport instructional space in the Huff Athletic Center.
