Big year ahead

Perdomo ’18 selected for intern prep program, then headed to Scotland

Airaseem Perdomo ’18 looks to have an eventful 2017.

A business and accounting double major, Perdomo will start the year at the award-winning Mary T. Washington Wylie Internship Preparation Program – a three-day, all-expenses-paid program held every January in Chicago. The program is made available up to 25 African American and other underrepresented minority college sophomores, juniors or seniors interested in accounting careers.

Before Perdomo steps into a possible summer internship, she will spend the spring semester studying in Scotland at Perth College, part of the University of the Highlands & Islands, with which Monmouth has a study abroad partnership.

Perdomo was assisted in her application for the competitive Wylie program by Monmouth accounting professor Judy Peterson, to whom the junior expressed her profound gratitude.

“I need to say a big ‘Thank you’ to Judy Peterson, who helped me with the application process and with writing the essays,” Perdomo said. “I wouldn’t have known about this without her.”

The Wylie program’s goal is to prepare students for the accounting profession through practical training, resources and mentors. At the end of the program, participating firms interview the students for a variety of paid internships.

“I’m looking forward to lots of one-on-one time with the mentors, and also group interaction with other accounting students from around the state,” Perdomo said of the Jan. 4-6 program. “They help you with your interview skills, so that you can interview with firms. This is what I really need right now.”

Perdomo also won an HP Envy x360 touch-screen laptop from the Illinois CPA Society for her answer to the optional essay question on her application. She will receive the laptop at the program’s first session.

“Airaseem has already started the preparation process with great study habits, a passion for learning and understanding the value of an education,” said Peterson. “She is not one to squander any opportunity. I believe this Program will have a multiplicative effect on Airaseem’s accounting career.”

Later in January, Perdomo will fly to Scotland for her semester abroad.

“They don’t teach accounting there, but I’ll be taking a music business class and a marketing class,” she said. “I’ll be able to put those classes on my résumé.”

After returning to the U.S. in May and hopefully gaining valuable hands-on business and accounting experience during the summer, Perdomo will head back to Monmouth in August for her senior year.

Perdomo first heard about Monmouth at a college fair near her home, where she met Chicago-based regional director of admission Brandon Meyer. When Meyer visited her high school, Proviso Math and Science Academy, Perdomo had a lot of questions about Monmouth.

“I was expecting the small-community feel, but I was not expecting the relationships you’re able to form with faculty and students,” she said. “I have lots of friends from different majors. I don’t think that students who go to a large university can say that as easily.”

In addition to Peterson’s assistance, Perdomo has also appreciated the classroom style of Professor Mike Connell, who “teaches economics in a way I understand.”

“We write weekly blogs, and that way I can better remember what I’m learning,” she said. “He does a great job of personalizing econ terms with my life.”

Perdomo hopes her studies lead her into a career on the business side of a publishing house, preferably in New York City.
