Chorale tour
Vocal ensemble to be joined in Florida by Chamber Choir, Sassy Lassies
Three Monmouth College vocal groups will perform in Florida during the College’s spring break in March.
Although the Chorale, Chamber Choir and Sassy Lassies will spend the majority of their time in the Sunshine State, their performance schedule begins and ends in Illinois.
Following a 10:30 a.m., Feb. 26 performance at Monmouth’s Faith United Presbyterian Church, the opening concert of the tour will be at 7 p.m. March 4 at Eden Church in Edwardsville, Ill.
An encore presentation of the tour program will be given at 7:30 p.m. March 17 in the Kasch Performance Hall of Monmouth College’s Dahl Chapel and Auditorium.
In between, the Chorale will perform at 7 p.m. each night at the following Florida churches: March 6 at Kirkwood Presbyterian Church in Bradenton; March 7 at Faith Lutheran Church in Sarasota; and March 8 at First Baptist Church in Cocoa.
“For the tour, the Chorale and Chamber Choir will perform a wide variety of music, including classical music from the Renaissance period through pieces that were composed very recently,” said associate professor of music Tim Pahel, who directs the groups. “There will also be multicultural selections such as a Brazilian folk song and an African-American spiritual.”
The highly selective, 40-member Chorale maintains an active and demanding rehearsal and performance schedule. In addition to serving as centerpiece for the annual “Christmas at Monmouth” concert, it performs regularly both on and off campus. The Chorale engages students from nearly every major at Monmouth, giving its members well-rounded musical experiences with high expectations for performance and competency.
The Chamber Choir is a group of 17 highly skilled vocalists selected from the Chorale membership. The Sassy Lassies are a student-led a cappella group.
The Chorale has toured extensively nationally and internationally over the years, visiting Scotland, Spain, Italy and nearly half the U.S. states. In 2013, the group performed in prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York City.
Pahel holds a bachelor’s degree from Lawrence University, a master’s degree from the University of Illinois and a doctor of musical arts degree from the University of Iowa, where he studied conducting with the internationally renowned Dr. Timothy Stalter.
