Sixth-Graders Take on City Council
How might we make our city more kid-friendly? Our city’s young residents have some ideas.
Sixth grade students at Monmouth’s PLACE teaching sites partner school, Central Intermediate, spent a month bringing together social studies, math, science and language arts to answer their driving question: How might we make our city more kid-friendly? Deep discussions, brainstorming sessions, and consultations with community experts resulted in innovative ideas like reviving the downtown movie theater, fixing sidewalks around the YMCA, and converting an abandoned warehouse building into a trampoline park. Students prepared and presented their final proposals to the city council during what became the highest-attended city council meeting in recent history.
