Golden Scots Celebration

More than 100 alumni and friends to return to campus June 8-11
  • June 8-11 marks the College’s ninth-annual Golden Scots Celebration.
Monmouth College will turn back the calendar this weekend when more than 100 alumni and friends return to campus for an annual celebration of the College and its heritage.

Alumni who graduated from Monmouth in 1972 or earlier will return June 8-11 to participate in the College’s ninth-annual Golden Scots Celebration. A total of 125 alumni and friends have registered for the event.

Among the weekend’s events are special reunions for the 45th, 50th, 55th, 60th and 65th anniversary classes. Other highlights include: seminars led by alumni; campus tours; a dance; and a traditional chapel service.

“Reunion committees from each of the milestone classes have played a huge role in the preparation and planning of our annual Golden Scots Celebration,” said Director of Alumni Engagement Hannah Maher. “We are looking forward to seeing all their hard work pay off during what is sure to be a memorable weekend.”

Activities begin June 8, when alumni check into their air-conditioned dorm rooms from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Golden Scots will tour campus and the Educational Garden and Farm and attend a program on how the light of Monmouth College’s Presbyterian affiliation shines today. The College is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA).

At 4:30 p.m., a reception will be held for the opening of an alumni art show in the College’s Everett Gallery in Hewes Library. Featured artists include Emeritus Professor of Art Harlow Blum, Lois Tornquist Smith ’52, Bonnita McAllister Courtney ’58, Deeks Carroll ’62, Mary Ellen Biciste Porter ’67, Tina Hartwig ’68 and Holly Sweeney-Hillman ’72. The day will conclude with a kick-off dinner and an evening social.

Events on June 9 include a question-and-answer session with senior administrative staff, as well as presentations led by 1967 alumni Caroline Marvin and Wendell Shauman about their careers in psychotherapy and farming, respectively. Presentations will also be given about Monmouth’s changing landscape and microbrewing. Golden Scots will have the opportunity to learn more about the College’s Quinby House, which is celebrating its sesquicentennial. The evening program features a progressive dinner, a social and an opportunity for star-gazing in the College’s Adolphson Observatory.

June 10 programs include a talk by a group of Monmouth’s international students and presentations by Dr. Rick Kaskel ’67 and Bill Irelan ’62, who will discuss, respectively, pediatrics and living, working and traveling abroad. The day’s schedule concludes with reunion dinners for the classes of 1952, 1957, 1962, 1967 and 1972, followed by a “Boogie Fever” dance event and an evening social.

The Golden Scots weekend will conclude June 11 with a memorial service for deceased alumni, based on a traditional Monmouth College chapel service, featuring an alumni choir.
