Personality scholar McAdams to present Sept. 13 lecture
MONMOUTH, Ill. – A scholar on personality will offer a psychological take on President Donald Trump during a free public lecture at Monmouth College.
Dan McAdams, the Henry Wade Rogers Professor of Psychology and Human Development at Northwestern University, will speak at 7 p.m. Sept. 13 in Dahl Chapel and Auditorium.
The title of his lecture is “Donald Trump and Me: A Psychological Perspective on the Presidency.”
McAdams works in the areas of personality and lifespan developmental psychology. His research focuses on concepts of self and identity in contemporary American society and on themes of power, intimacy, redemption and generativity across the adult life course. He has published over 200 scientific articles and chapters and numerous books.
Two years ago, McAdams published The Art and Science of Personality Development, which reviewers called a “fascinating book that presents an integrative ‘big picture’ of personality development from the earliest days of life through old age” and “the most comprehensive and integrated overview of personality development currently available.”
Added another reviewer: “This is a powerful book that succeeds on two levels. First, it communicates how personality research is done and how researchers arrive at scientifically defensible answers to questions about human nature. Second, it invites readers to introspect – to ask themselves how they came to be who they are. The book is broad and deep. Like the best of teachers, it is intellectually satisfying and great fun.”
McAdams is also the author of The Person: An Introduction to the Science of Personality Psychology, a classroom textbook. He co-edited, with Amia Lieblich and Ruthellen Josselson, the 11-book series “The Narrative Study of Lives.”
Awarded a doctorate from the Harvard Department of Social Relations in 1979, McAdams is president and a founding member of the Association for Research in Personality. He is also a Fellow of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology and the American Psychological Society.
