Family Weekend

Monmouth College to host annual celebration Sept. 29-Oct. 1
MONMOUTH, Ill. — Monmouth College will celebrate its annual Family Weekend Sept. 29-Oct. 1. Traditionally held on the fourth weekend of the fall semester, the three-day event allows students to share the Monmouth experience with their family members.

“It’s great to watch students excitedly introducing family members to new friends, faculty and staff members, or just having fun with their families at the numerous activities,” said Associate Dean of Students and Director of Campus Events Karen Ogorzalek. “I also enjoy seeing the families of seniors who haven’t missed a Family Weekend since their child’s first year. The weekend is a great way to help everyone become part of the Monmouth College family.”

New to Family Weekend this year is an overview of “Introduction to Liberal Arts” – the required course for all first-year students – and the role that mentors play in assisting first-year students.

“We hope the families will have a better understanding of this course and how it introduces our students to the Monmouth learning community,” said Ogorzalek.

Family Weekend festivities will begin with Top Hat Side Show, a performance for students and their families at 7 p.m. Sept. 29 in Dahl Chapel and Auditorium.

On Saturday, Sept. 30, a legacy brunch will be held at 10 a.m. Open by invitation to students and their alumni relatives, the event celebrates Monmouth’s long-standing family traditions.

From 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday, inflatable activities for all ages will be available in The Quad, behind Stockdale Student Center. An all-campus cookout will be held at 11:30 a.m. in The Quad.

The Fighting Scots football team will kick off its second home game of the season at 1 p.m. against Lawrence University at April Zorn Memorial Stadium. Also on Saturday, the Monmouth soccer teams will play Knox College at Peacock Memorial Athletic Park. The women’s game begins at 1 p.m., and the men’s game follows at about 3:30 p.m.

Saturday night will feature two events. At 7 p.m. in Dahl Chapel and Auditorium, three music ensembles will present the annual Family Weekend Concert, which is free and open to the public. Performing will be the Monmouth Chamber Orchestra, the Monmouth Chorale and the Monmouth Winds.

Following the concert at 9 p.m., mentalist Chris Carter will perform in Dahl Chapel. That event is free, but reservations and a ticket are required for admission.

The weekend’s activities will conclude with a buffet brunch from 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. on Sunday in the Main Dining Room in Stockdale Student Center.
