McMullen Lecture
Cameron ’98 to discuss cancer prevention during Oct. 17 talk
MONMOUTH, Ill. – Jennifer Cameron, a 1998 graduate of Monmouth College, will present the College’s annual Donald B. McMullen Memorial Lecture in Biology at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 17 in the Pattee Auditorium of the Center for Science and Business.
Cameron is an assistant professor at Louisiana State University’s Health Science Center School of Medicine. Her research there focuses on preventive cancer treatment, specifically with the human papillomavirus (HPV).
Free and open to the public, her lecture is titled “Cancer: An Ounce of Prevention Is Worth a Pound of Cure.”
“One of my big areas of interests is not in developing drugs to battle cancer, but in detecting cancer in very early stages and preventing it from developing,” said Cameron, who focuses on cervical cancer. “We have to start thinking about what we need to do better to help women. We need a screening paradigm change, and I’ve received federal funding to research that.”
After she graduated from Monmouth, Cameron completed her doctorate at LSU six years later. Then she headed to Boston for a post-doctorate opportunity with a Harvard University professor. She then returned to Louisiana to pursue an opportunity for postdoctoral students at Tulane University. She did that work for six years before venturing down her own research path at LSU.
Earlier in the day, Cameron will deliver a talk geared to Monmouth’s biology students titled “Prescience Is Bliss: Predicting Outcomes of Low-grade Dysplasia of the Cervix to Inform Clinical Management.” That talk, which is also open to the public, will be held at 4 p.m. in the Pattee Auditorium.
Cameron will also visit with several Monmouth College classes during her time in the area. She is a graduate of nearby Bushnell-Prairie City High School.
The McMullen Lectureship in Biology was endowed in 1973 by Mrs. Donald McMullen of Silver Springs, Md., in memory of her husband, who was Monmouth College biology professor from 1928-38. The fund annually brings an outstanding scholar in the biological sciences to campus.
