Fighting Scots Justin Aluya, Dan Evers earn recognition in basketball, track
MONMOUTH, Ill. – Two Fighting Scots seniors were recognized nationally for their athletic achievements last week.
Monmouth’s Dan Evers (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) not only vaulted into the Monmouth College record book last weekend, he also cracked the national records and earned the Division III National Athlete of the Week award from the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Competing at the Keck Invitational in Bloomington Saturday, Evers moved into the nation’s all-time top 10 in the pole vault. The four-time All-American cleared a Monmouth-record height of 17’4-1/4”, moving within 2 inches of the national leader. It was the third time in four meets that Evers has cleared a personal best and the second time this season he has reset his own school record.
An environmental studies and sustainability major, Evers is the son of Tom and Tara Evers.
Just hours after Justin Aluya (Placentia, Calif./Valencia) was named the Midwest Conference Performer of the Week in men’s basketball, the record-setting post player was named to the D3hoops.com Team of the Week.
The weekly award recognizes the top performances in the past week by Division III men’s and women’s basketball players and Aluya’s performance was among the best. His 25 rebound game against Grinnell in last week’s 107-92 win over the Pioneers broke the previous single game rebounding record of 23 set in 1976 by M Club Hall of Famer Roger Sander. As Monmouth stayed in a two-way tie for the Midwest Conference lead with a pair of victories, Aluya averaged 24.5 points and 16.5 rebounds per game, hitting 20-of-27 field goals (.741) with five assists, five blocks and four steals.
A business major, Aluya is the son of Joseph and Bibianna Aluya.
