Fourth in forensics
Monmouth’s speech team places fourth at UW-Eau Claire event
MONMOUTH, Ill. – Another strong showing last weekend, which included a handful of top five performances, lifted the Monmouth College speech team to a fourth-place finish at the Grace Walsh Individual Events Tournament, hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
Anthony Adams ’18 of Chicago continued his impressive senior campaign, winning a pair of categories – after-dinner speaking and informative speaking. He also placed fifth in communication analysis.
“As a senior and our team captain, Anthony has been stepping up in competition all season,” said the team’s director, Rebecca Buel Young. “Winning two events this past weekend was not only evidence of his hard work and growth as a public speaker, but his increasing passion for advocacy and this activity.”
Two other Monmouth competitors posted high finishes, with Britt Parker ’18 of Washington, Ill., placing third in after-dinner speaking and Sarah Hunt ’18 of Pekin, Ill., placing fourth in persuasive speaking.
On Sunday, Monmouth’s team hosted the second annual Fighting Scot Invitational on the Eau Claire campus.
Monmouth will attend several more regular season forensics tournaments, including the state of Illinois tournament on March 3-4, and then begin preparing for the AFA National Individual Events Tournament in Colorado Springs, Colo., and the NFA National Championship Tournament in Oshkosh, Wis.
Buel Young will continue to direct the NFA Tournament, where Monmouth hopes to repeat last year’s showing by placing within the top 10 teams in its competitive division.
