A week of music

Recital featuring Anne Suda begins week of instrumental performances at Monmouth
MONMOUTH, Ill. – A recital by two classical artists from Los Angeles will begin a week of instrumental performances at Monmouth College.

Cellist Anne Suda – the daughter of Monmouth faculty members David and Carolyn Suda – and pianist James Lent will present a recital of cello and piano music ranging from Schumann, Tchaikovsky and Debussy to newer works created in Hollywood and New York when they perform at 3 p.m. April 15 in Dahl Chapel.

Also scheduled for the week are Dahl Chapel performances by the Percussion Ensemble at 7:30 p.m. April 16, the Jazz Ensemble at 7:30 p.m. April 17 and the Brass Quintet at 2 p.m. April 22.

All four performances are free and open to the public.

Included in the newer works for the cello and piano recital will be Bernstein’s West Side Story and Peter Pan, as well as Mark Carlson’s Twilight and short pieces by Charlie Chaplin, who was a cellist.

After graduating from Monmouth High School, Suda studied cello and English at Vanderbilt University and received her master’s degree from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. She is concluding her third year of doctor of musical arts studies at UCLA.

The recent winner of the Francis Walton solo competition prize in Seattle, Suda has given recitals at Canada’s Banff Center, England’s Aldebourg Festival, the American Cathedral in Paris, Kennedy Center, Yale’s Norfolk Festival, Berkeley University and Stanford University. Recent concerto appearances include the UCLA Orchestra, Venice Symphony, Sonoma Philharmonic and San Francisco Chamber Orchestra, and well as a recent appearance with the Knox-Galesburg Symphony. She currently performs in Los Angeles with the Vemm Quartet and the Los Angeles Cello Quartet.

Her cello duo, Cellisimo, is scheduled for a 12-state tour in 2018-19, which will include a performance for Monmouth’s Maple Leaf Community Concert Series.

Wrote a music critic about Suda’s performance of Debussy, which will also be played in Dahl Chapel: “Cellist Anne Suda read so much contrast into the score, intermittently I felt I wasn’t hearing Debussy at all, but discovering his lost contemporary genius. It was the freshest interpretation I’ve heard.”

Lent is coordinator of collaborative piano at UCLA with degrees from Juilliard and a doctor of musical arts from the Yale School of Music. His solo performances include appearances with the Vancouver Symphony, Houston Symphony, the Shanghai Philharmonic and the Utah Symphony. He made his Alabama Symphony debut to critical acclaim, performing Rachmaninoff’s “Concerto No. 2” on 24 hours’ notice to replace Andre Watts.

Lent’s awards include prizes in the New York Concert Artists Guild International Competition, the National Chopin Competition, the Washington International Competition and the Olga Koussevitsky Piano Competition in New York. He serves on the summer faculty of the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, Calif., and the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival.
