MONMOUTH, Ill. – Tyler Lind ’21, an art major from Lisbon, Iowa, was awarded Best of Show at Monmouth College’s recent Juried Student Art Exhibition.

BEST OF SHOW: “Winds of Change” by Tyler Lind ’21 was awarded Best of Show in the Juried Student Art Exhibit.Titled “Winds of Change,” Lind’s windmill sculpture earned the top honor at the exhibition, which was juried by Knox county artist Chris Dokolasa. In all, 49 students submitted 111 artworks to be considered for the November exhibition.

“It started out as a class project about nature,” said Lind of his winning work. “The first thing that went through my mind was wind.”

First, Lind drew what he wanted to create. The he set out collecting his supplies – sticks large and small from the trees lining the College’s front lawn outside Wallace Hall. The whole process took him nearly a month to complete.

In high school, Lind took all 12 art classes his school offered, so choosing a major at Monmouth was not as hard as creating the art itself has been.

“I think that sometimes when people see an art major, they think, ‘Oh, I can do that,’” said Lind. “But it’s actually hard to do, and there can be a lot of frustration involved. It’s also a time management challenge, because you really want to pour yourself into your art, but then you have that long paper to write, or that French test to study for.”

Lind, who hopes to become a professional artist, appreciates the growth he’s experienced at Monmouth.

“The art faculty has really pushed me in a way to bring out things I wouldn’t have ever imagined when I was in high school,” he said.

In particular, Lind was inspired to keep pursuing his dream of being a sculptor through a class visit by artist Alexander Martin of Peoria, Ill.

“He showed us his website, and hearing what he had to say was really inspiring to me,” said Lind.
