In 1989, Monmouth named the student center the Stockdale Center to honor Stockdale’s father, Vice Adm. James Stockdale ’46. Stockdale attended from nearby Abingdon, Illinois, before entering the United States Naval Academy. One of four Monmouth alumni to earn the Congressional Medal of Honor, James Stockdale was inducted into the Monmouth Hall of Achievement in 2000. In 2016, the College established its James and Sybil Stockdale Fellows Program, a prestigious scholarship, leadership, service and enrichment program for Monmouth students. Sid Stockdale was on campus to discuss his memoir, A World Apart: Growing Up Stockdale During Vietnam. It was the first time Sid, who grew up in California and in Connecticut, had seen the building named in honor of his father, who died in 2005. Sybil Stockdale died in 2015.
