Eight music events on tap for end of spring semester.

MONMOUTH, Ill. – Four concerts and four senior recitals are scheduled at the end of April as Monmouth College’s 2018-19 academic year enters its final days.

All of the events will be held in the Kasch Performance Hall of Dahl Chapel and Auditorium and are free and open to the public.

Four ensembles will be featured in the first of the concerts, “A Springtime of Music,” at 7:30 p.m. April 26. Also on tap is a concert by the Wind Ensemble and Concert Band at 2 p.m. April 28; a performance by the Monmouth College Pipe Band as part of the Highland Arts Concert at 7 p.m. April 29; and a Jazz Band concert at 7 p.m. April 30.

The senior recitals include: Oscar Diaz of Chicago (percussion) at 3 p.m. April 27; Emily Malecha of Libertyville, Ill., (voice) at 7:30 p.m. April 27; Lauren Cisna of Galva, Ill., (piano) at 6 p.m. April 28; and Miles Rose of Princeton, Ill., (voice) at 7:30 p.m. April 28.

The program for “A Springtime of Music” includes the Monmouth and Knox College Chamber Orchestra, as well as three Monmouth vocal groups – the Chamber Choir, the Concert Choir and the Highland Harmonizers.

The Chamber Orchestra will perform a wide variety of works, from a movement of a Haydn symphony to selections from Fiddler on the Roof.

The Chamber Choir’s section of the program will feature a lively arrangement of the spiritual “Ain’-a That Good News,” an arrangement of an American folk song, “Soldier Won’t You Marry Me?,” and pieces by Maurice Durufle and Johannes Brahms.

The student-directed Highland Harmonizers will perform popular selections, including “Rise Up,” originally sung by Andra Day.

As part of the performance, the Concert Choir will present “Music for Human Rights,” featuring music of the world paired with quotations from leaders in the human rights movement. The musicians will lend their voices in the reciting of selections by Maya Angelou, Martin Luther King Jr. and other noted human rights leaders.

Music will also be performed in honor of YomHaShoah or Holocaust Remembrance Day and will include texts written by children while incarcerated in the Terezin Concentration Camp in Czechoslovakia. Symbolic music of the Civil Rights Movement by U2 and John Lennon and Paul McCartney will be included.

The Highland Arts Concert will showcase senior Pipe Band members Jaron Park of Springfield, Ill., and Oscar Diaz, as well as the Monmouth College Highland Dancers.
