‘A New Level of Understanding’
Earlier this week, RSM returned to campus, with company representatives Ryan Weber and Tricia Raper speaking to four of Molly Mayfield’s accounting classes to help students better understand career opportunities in their field.
“I knew the students would be excited about the RSM visit to our classes this spring given the excitement some of them showed in the fall,” said Mayfield. “However, what I didn’t realize was how rejuvenated the students would feel upon receiving a little more insight into not only career exploration at RSM, but also in general.”
Mayfield said that her students experienced a “breakthrough” thanks to the RSM visit.
“We were able to break through to a new level of understanding around what the job market can offer business and accounting candidates today,” she said. “This was done both from a public and private accounting perspective, which is extremely useful for those students who are accounting majors looking to establish their lifelong rewarding career in the profession.”
Among the students who experienced the revelation was Nina Bozovic ’24 of Oak Park, Illinois.
“I enjoyed meeting with RSM and learning about the impact that accounting and financial activity has on a company,” said Bozovic. “It was interesting to hear about how marketing, business, management, HR and accounting are all important to company success and how they all work together to achieve it.”
“I did have the idea that accountants only work at a desk and handle numbers. (Ryan) made it clear that the job is so much more than that, and that having accounting experience can be very helpful when I’m in the job market.” – Jadyn Ellison
Mayfield said the visit sparked several of her students’ interest in applying to the company for internship or job opportunities.
“The RSM visit impacted me because it made me think about minoring in accounting,” said Jadyn Ellison ’25 of Hudson, Illinois. “Ryan did a good job selling me on it, because I did have the idea that accountants only work at a desk and handle numbers. He made it clear that the job is so much more than that, and that having accounting experience can be very helpful when I’m in the job market.”
Similar to Ellison, Lauren Becker ’25 of Knoxville, Illinois, appreciated the opportunity to gain a better understanding of what accountants contribute to a company.
“The visit with RSM made me realize that accountants can do so much more than just sit at a desk,” she said. “I didn’t know that they went out in the world and did things like counting animals for farmers. The visit also made me realize that you can have fun, enjoyable jobs within accounting and that RSM is a great example of what to look for in future careers.”
