Trick-or-Treat!

Plenty of Halloween activities on tap for Monmouth College students, local community

MONMOUTH, Ill. – The scares won’t be scarce this Halloween season, as Monmouth College will host or be a part of several events.

HALLOWEEN EVENTS: Trick-or-treat opportunities on campus are just part of the fun scheduled for Oct. 31, as well as a special community event on Oct. 29.Multiple trick-or-treat opportunities will be held on Oct. 31, including the annual “Trunk or Treat” event sponsored by the College’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee. SAAC members will be in the Poling Hall parking lot, located just south of the Huff Athletic Center, from 4-6 p.m.

The College’s residence life staff and students will host a similar event at the same time on Halloween, handing out candy to trick-or-treaters in the doorways of the College’s residence halls.

Both events are free and open to area children. (Check out the the map for “Trunk or Treat” and the residence halls’ trick-or-treat.)

The Mindful Monmouth organization will also offer trick-or-treat on Oct. 31, involving all campus offices, classes and departments, while Scots Student Senate, the College’s student government organization, will encourage students to dress up in costumes and have a social media contest.

The College’s Association for Student Activities and Programming, also known as ASAP, will sponsor a Halloween-themed trivia contest during dinner hours.

Off-campus Halloween fun

Leading up to Halloween, the Warren County History Museum, 238 S. Sunny Lane, will host a “Scarecrow from Scratch” contest on Saturday, Oct. 29, starting at 2 p.m.

“This would be a wonderful activity for college groups to participate in,” said the museum’s rental and events manager Alyssa Whitacre, a 2020 Monmouth alumna. “It is a chance to be creative, see the local history museum and compete with fellow college students and community members. Straw is provided, so all the participants need to bring is supplies and decorations to make the scarecrows.”

Following the contest, author and 1990 Monmouth graduate Sylvia Shults will give a talk at 7 p.m. about her book, Fractured Spirits: Hauntings at The Peoria State Hospital.

“This would especially be a great lecture for college students to attend, as it is local to our area, it’s about paranormal activity, and we provide free refreshments,” said Whitacre.
