MONMOUTH, Ill. — Special performers, a concert, an event celebrating the human spirit and a sprint through the history of Scottish literature will highlight this year’s Monmouth College Family Weekend.

Monmouth will celebrate its annual Family Weekend Sept. 27-29. The three-day event allows students to share the Monmouth experience with their family members. (UPDATE: Several events have been moved to their rain site.)

“We are as excited as the students to welcome their families back to campus,” said Associate Dean of Students and Director of Campus Events Karen Ogorzalek, who oversees the weekend. “It’s a special time for families to reconnect with their son or daughter so they can share their experiences thus far and meet the friends they have built relationships with throughout the first few weeks on campus. In addition to all the fun interactive activities, there are opportunities for families to interact with faculty and staff on campus.”

Family Weekend festivities will begin with a comedy juggling performance by Marcus Monroe for students and their families at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, in Wells Theater.

“My Story,” an event sponsored by the Associated Students of Monmouth College, will begin at 8:30 p.m. at the rain site of Wells Theater. Students will share their personal experiences about how they overcame adversity, and student performers will also be featured.

At 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, the 18th annual Legacy Brunch will be held in Mellinger Commons in the Center for Science and Business. Open by invitation to students and their alumni relatives, the event celebrates Monmouth’s long-standing family traditions.

The second installment of this year’s Great Lectures Series will be presented at 11 a.m. Saturday. Dean of the Faculty Mark Willhardt will condense the entirety of Scottish literature into his hour-long talk. Free and open to the public, the lecture will be held in the Barnes Electronic Classroom on the lower level of Hewes Library.

Also at 11 a.m. Saturday, families of first-year students can attend “Supporting Your Student’s Success” in the Veterans Great Room of the Center for Science and Business. The forum will feature discussions about how to support first-year Monmouth students.

From 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. on Saturday, inflatable activities for all ages will be available in the rain site of the Huff Athletic Center. There will also be a trick dog show, balloon artists, face painters, novelties and games. An all-campus cookout will be held from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. in the rain site of the Main Dining Room in Stockdale Center.

The Fighting Scots football team will kick off its second home game of the season at 1 p.m. Saturday against St. Norbert College at April Zorn Memorial Stadium.

Saturday night will feature two events in Dahl Chapel and Auditorium. At 7 p.m., three music ensembles will present the annual Family Weekend Concert, which is free and open to the public. Performing will be the Monmouth Chamber Orchestra, the Monmouth Chorale and the Monmouth Winds.

Following the concert, the mentalist duo of Antonia and David will perform at 9 p.m.

The weekend’s activities will conclude with a buffet brunch from 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. on Sunday in the Main Dining Room in Stockdale Student Center.
