A Thirst for Knowledge

Admiral’s Scholar Emily Canterbury looks forward to having ‘my mind blown’ by Monmouth’s academic programs.

MONMOUTH, Ill. – Emily Canterbury of Orion, Illinois, does not know what she wants to major in at college, but she knows which college she plans to attend.

EMILY CANTEBURY: “I thought that if I learned that much in one hour (in a Monmouth mini-class), think about how much I could learn in a year.” The Orion High School senior is headed to Monmouth College, where she has been named one of the school’s two Admiral’s Scholars. Admiral’s Scholars receive a full-tuition scholarship worth more than $160,000 at the national liberal arts college. They also get a $5,000 academic enrichment fund and a place in the College’s prestigious James and Sybil Stockdale Fellows Program.

Canterbury was doing homework when she received the news that she had been named a Monmouth Admiral’s Scholar.

Canterbury said at first “I kind of just freeze, and it feels like time stopped.”

But after her mother learned the good news, a celebration ensued.

“My Mom and I screamed,” said Canterbury, the daughter of Toni and John Canterbury. “We have nearby neighbors, so they probably thought that someone got hurt. But it was amazing. It felt like a dream because I’ve been worrying about it for so long.”

Canterbury said she was attracted to Monmouth through a series of virtual mini-classes that were offered online last summer.

“I got a postcard in the mail that had this list of virtual mini-courses that looked interesting,” said Canterbury. “I wound up taking a bunch of them, and I really liked the professors who taught the classes. They were all super smart and nice. I learned so much from the classes, and I got this huge amount of information. I thought that if I learned that much in one hour, think about how much I could learn in a year.”

Canterbury said her interest in Monmouth only increased when she visited campus.

“I thought the campus was beautiful, and the academic programs of Monmouth really struck me,” she said.

A member of the National Honor Society, Canterbury has participated in programs that prepare students for science, technology, engineering and mathematics – known as STEM programs. She is also a member of her school’s drama club and has been involved with several community service projects.

Canterbury plans to enter Monmouth without a major, although she is interested in English and neuroscience. No matter where she lands, Canterbury aims to make a difference in the world.

“I read a bunch, and I really like finding out new things,” she said. “I like having my mind blown by what I learn, and I know that at Monmouth that is what’s going to happen. The more curious we are as a group, the more that will lead to discovery that will help the world as a whole. And I want to contribute to that and be part of this great change that will help us all.”

The Admiral’s Scholarship and the Stockdale Fellows Program honor the late Vice Adm. James B. Stockdale, a member of the Monmouth College Class of 1946, and his late wife, Sybil. A Medal of Honor recipient for his service in the Vietnam War, Stockdale was later president of both the Naval War College and The Citadel, and was a longtime fellow of the Hoover Institution.
