Love at First Sight

For Trustees’ Scholar Mia Martino, seeing was believing when she visited Monmouth.

MONMOUTH, Ill. – For Mia Martino of Palatine, Illinois, it was love at first sight when she walked onto the Monmouth College campus.

I just felt like I belonged there from the second that I stepped on the campus. I feel like I will thrive 100% in a small-school environment.”Martino toured Monmouth last October, and “I just loved it so much.”

“I fell in love with the campus,” said Martino, the daughter of Darcey and Garth Martino of Palatine. “It was just so beautiful and the people were so nice.”

Martino will be a history and English major at the College, and she has also been named one of the College’s four Trustees’ Scholars in the Monmouth Class of 2025. Trustees Scholars receive a full four-year tuition scholarship, worth more than $160,000. Martino was selected from among 165 high school seniors from 15 states who interviewed this year for the College’s top scholarships.

Martino, who finished her coursework at Palatine High School last December, said she was attracted to Monmouth because of its strong sense of community.

“I went to a huge high school, and I just didn’t really feel like I fit in in the large-school environment,” she said. “Monmouth’s total size is smaller than my graduating class. When I saw Monmouth, I was like ‘This feels like home.’ I just felt like I belonged there from the second that I stepped on the campus. I feel like I will thrive 100% in a small-school environment. I am looking forward to being close with my professors and having friends that I see every single day.”

Since finishing her high school coursework, Martino has split her time working for the Palatine library and her township’s government. A member of the National Honor Society, she was on her school’s cross country and track & field teams, and she was also involved with her school’s Best Buddies program.

Martino is interested in becoming a college history professor. She should feel right at home as a Monmouth Scot, because in addition to England’s Tudor period, Martino is also interested in Scottish history.

“I’ve always been interested in history – I am obsessed with it,” she said.
