In memoriam: George Nieman
MONMOUTH, Ill. – George C. Nieman, emeritus professor of chemistry, died at his Monmouth home on Oct. 8. He was 81.
A native of Dayton, Ohio, Nieman came to Monmouth in 1979 from Muskingum College in Ohio, where he was professor of chemistry for nine years, serving as chairman of the department and coordinator of the natural sciences division. He previously taught at the University of Rochester for six years.
The author of numerous scientific articles, Nieman was the recipient in 1990 of an Individual Professional Development Activities award for his research activities conducted during a sabbatical at Yale University. In 1993, he served on the College’s presidential search committee. He retired in 2002 after 23 years at Monmouth.
Nieman is survived by his wife, Liz; daughter, Patty; and sons Bob and Michael.
