Voss Receives Top Transfer Scholarship

Tony Voss has received Monmouth’s Wallace Founders Scholarship, given to an entering Monmouth transfer student who has a record of exceptional academic achievement and leadership.

MONMOUTH, Ill. – For Tony Voss, the decision to attend Monmouth College was a result of love at first sight. And now he will get to attend the liberal arts college as one of its distinguished scholar students.

TONY VOSS: “I was impressed with the professors and students I met, and it seemed like the kind of place that can cater to my strengths and also turn my weaknesses into strengths.”Voss, who attends Illinois Central College, has received Monmouth’s Wallace Founders Scholarship. The full-tuition scholarship is given to an entering Monmouth transfer student who has a record of exceptional academic achievement and leadership in his or her college and community.

A resident of Peoria, Voss started to explore Monmouth after he met a College representative last fall at ICC. Once he visited the liberal arts college, he knew it was the place for him.

“I never had the feeling of falling in love with a college like I did with Monmouth,” said Voss, the son of Tony and Angela Voss. “I was impressed with the professors and students I met, and it seemed like the kind of place that can cater to my strengths and also turn my weaknesses into strengths.”

Voss is a public relations major at ICC, and he plans to continue that major at Monmouth and possibly add a second major in business.

“I wanted to be a communications major originally,” said Voss. “But after I took a PR class and started to work in it, I decided that’s what I wanted to major in. I’ve always been kind of a planner, and I am also attracted to working for a good cause. You get to do both of those things in PR. My motto is I want to leave the world better than I found it, and working in PR is the best way I can do that.”

Voss has already built an impressive resume in public relations. He freelanced for the Croatian Fraternal Union; worked with Harbinger Student Media at ICC; and served as an intern for the Peoria Art Guild and a Jim Maloof Legacy of Love event that supported St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. He’s also been a writing tutor at his college. In his spare time, Voss enjoys photography, performing his poetry and working with local bands.

Voss said that receiving a Wallace Founders Scholarship is a vindication of his educational journey, which began as a home-school student and continued as a 17-year-old college freshman.

“It’s an immense privilege to receive this scholarship,” Voss said. “When I was younger, there was a kid who told me that I would never get into college because I was home-schooled. I let those comments go because I wasn’t going to put myself in a box based on what others felt about me. This scholarship is a reminder to me that I am the person I choose to be.”
