- Students John Wells, Aimee Miller and Cole Downey are pictured after competing at the Mid-America Forensics League tournaments at Northern Illinois University earlier this month.
The Monmouth College forensics team, directed by Rebecca Buel, competed at a pair of tournaments earlier this month.
“The team is growing, with 12 students having competed this year,” said Buel, who also serves as executive secretary of the Mid-America Forensics League. “The team has been to more tournaments and reached more final rounds than in past years.”
At the Frank-Ly Speaking Speech Tournament, hosted by the College of DuPage, three of the eight students competing brought home awards, including senior Amee Miller of Lake in the Hills, who won the impromptu speaking category. Sophomores Cole Downey of Geneva and Ellen Johnson of Kewanee placed third and sixth, respectively, in prose interpretation and dramatic interpretation.
Also competing were juniors John Wells of Freeport and David Edge of Kewanee and freshmen Sophie Slocum of Marengo, Michael Horath of Chatham and Anthony Adams of Chicago.
A week later at the Mid-America Forensics League tournaments at Northern Illinois University, Miller and Downey both earned two awards. Downey was fourth on both days of the prose interpretation competition, while Miller placed fourth in program oral interpretation on the first day and sixth on the second day.
“We’ve worked incredibly hard on our events this year, so it’s fantastic to see all of that effort paying off,” said Miller, who captains the team. “I’m ecstatic that the team is becoming more established as a whole.”
