Joint exhibit

Painter Markwart, photographer Foley featured at MC’s Everett Gallery
A joint exhibit by painter Carla Markwart and photographer Tom Foley is currently on display in Monmouth College’s Everett Gallery.

A reception and gallery talk will be held Feb. 27 at 3 p.m. for Markwart and Foley, who live in Galesburg and are married. The exhibit, talk and reception are all free and open to the public.

“This is the first time I have shared an art show with Carla,” said Foley. “It surprised me how our work goes together, with the interest in structure and color.”

A former member of Monmouth’s art faculty, Markwart has been featured in several exhibits in and around Galesburg in recent years. This is her third exhibit in the Everett Gallery and her sixth in Monmouth, overall.

“These paintings are acrylic on watercolor paper,” said Markwart. “The imagery is from inside my studio or streets and buildings – structure. My newest paintings are based on downtown Chicago. I grew up looking at my father’s paintings of Chicago, and so this subject is personal as well as being fascinating visually.”

Markwart studied for three years at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She received her B.F.A. from the University of Illinois and her M.F.A. from the University of California.

“After working from observation in a traditional way for many years, I don’t find the slowness of mimetic painting refreshing anymore,” added Markwart. “I’m still looking at the same old things, but I’m trying to put more into each painting – more space, more color, more clarity. In each one, I get a little closer.”

Foley’s photos, which were shot during his annual vacation trip to the Mississippi Delta, include the Amour Lard building in Helena, Ark., and the Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale, Miss.

“My photos attempt to depict the effects of time and decay,” said Foley. “Photographers who have influenced my work are Ansel Adams, Walker Evans, Paul Stand and Diane Arbus. My friend Bruce Janssen was my first fine art photography mentor.  We both worked at my father’s camera store, Midwest Photo Service, in the early 1970s. But the biggest influence on my art still is my father, Bill Foley. He taught me how to use a Yashica camera when I was 10 years old. He passed away eight years ago, but I am still always wanting to make photos he would like.”

Located on the second floor of Hewes Library, the Everett Gallery is open during regular library hours: Mondays through Thursdays, 7:30 a.m. to midnight; Fridays, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays, noon to midnight.
