Chorale tour
Group to perform in Minneapolis, Chicago area; home concert is March 20
While many college students head south for spring break, the Monmouth College Chorale will travel north to begin its annual spring tour.
Directed by assistant professor of music Tim Pahel, the Chorale will perform at two churches in Minneapolis before making a southern swing to the Chicago area for four more concerts. The Chorale will be joined on the tour by two MC a cappella groups, The Scotsmen and The Sassy Lassies.
As in years past, the Chorale will also present its tour repertoire during a “home concert” after Monmouth classes have resumed. That performance, which will also include the Concert Choir under the direction of music instructor Dane Feenstra, will be on March 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Kasch Performance Hall of the Dahl Chapel and Auditorium.
The 49-member Chorale, which also features a smaller Chamber Choir, will perform in Minneapolis on March 7 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and on March 8 at Transfiguration Lutheran Church before taking to the road again to visit suburban Chicago. Dates there include March 9 at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Elgin, and three high schools on March 10 – Burlington (Central), Libertyville and Grayslake North.
“We will be performing a variety of musical styles,” said Pahel, who in addition to serving as MC’s director of choral and vocal activities, also directs the Galesburg Community Chorus.
Classical selections will include “At the Round Earth’s Imagined Corners” by Williametta Spencer, “Gaudete omnes” by Jan Sweelinck, “Nunc dimittis” by Arvo Pärt, and the “Suite de Lorca” by Einojuhani Rautavaara. There will also be the spiritual “Hard Trials” by Craig Hella Johnson; a Venezuelan song titled “Mata del anima sola”; “Jai Ho,” with text in Hindi, from the movie “Slumdog Millionaire”; and an early American folk hymn titled “Now Our Meeting’s Over.”
A highly selective mixed vocal ensemble, the Chorale maintains an active and demanding rehearsal and performance schedule. In addition to serving as centerpiece for the annual “Christmas at Monmouth” concert, it performs regularly both on and off campus. The Chorale engages students from nearly every major offered at Monmouth, giving its members well-rounded musical experiences with high expectations for performance and competency.
This year’s tour continues a tradition, as the Chorale has toured extensively nationally through the years, visiting nearly half the states in the country. In 2013, the group performed in prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York City. The Chorale also tours internationally, including recent trips to Scotland and Spain.
Pahel holds a bachelor’s degree from Lawrence University, a master’s degree from the University of Illinois and a doctor of musical arts degree from the University of Iowa, where he studied conducting with the internationally renowned Dr. Timothy Stalter.
