Spring concert
Monmouth Chamber Orchestra to perform on April 12 in Dahl Chapel
The Monmouth Chamber Orchestra will present its annual spring concert on April 12 at 2 p.m. in the Kasch Performance Hall of Dahl Chapel and Auditorium. It is free and open to the public.
Featured student soloists will be Mariela Shaker of Aleppo, Syria, and Katelyn Lawrence of Hampshire. Shaker will perform Vivaldi’s Violin Concerto in E Major, the “Spring Concerto.”
“This is a perfect work for a Sunday in April,” said music lecturer Carolyn Suda, who directs the orchestra. “Vivaldi’s programmatic piece brings to life birds singing, thunderstorms, murmuring brooks and flowers blooming. This is one of the most familiar works from the Baroque period.
A flutist, Lawrence will perform a solo arrangement of “Music of the Night” from “Phantom of the Opera.”
Iman Abdulrazzak of Syria and Shaker will both be featured in Richard Meyer’s “Bailes Para Orquesta,” which Suda calls “a wonderful collection of exciting Spanish dances and songs.”
The Classical world will be represented by Haydn’s Symphony #82 in C Major, “The Bear.” A select group of Monmouth Winds will join the strings for an arrangement of Saint Saens’ “Danse Bacchanale,” which Suda calls “a stirring crowd-pleaser with many famous and exotic melodies.”
An excerpt from Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings will complete the concert.
“This is the last orchestra concert that Mariela Shaker, our beautiful violinist from Syria, will serve as our concertmaster,” said Suda. “Mariela has been an inspiration to everyone who loves music in Monmouth. Despite the difficulties of her family still living in Aleppo, her enormous talent on the violin and her joyous personality have enriched our world.”
