‘People I Have Known’
Urban to reflect on 49 years as Monmouth professor
William Urban, who will retire in May after 49 years as a full-time professor at Monmouth College, will present a special lecture on April 24 at 4 p.m. in Room 276 of the Center for Science and Business.
Titled “People I Have Known,” the talk is free and open to the public.
“Monmouth College is much more than a beautiful campus and attractive buildings,” said Urban, who is the Lee L. Morgan Professor of History and International Studies. “It is the product of the people who worked here: faculty, staff, administration, Green Army and students. My talk will reflect on those now gone, but whose impact on me and the institution were profound.”
The faculty that Urban joined in 1966 included such legendary professors as Gracie Peterson, Sam Thompson, Garrett Thiessen and Bobby Woll, as well as Eva Cleland, Mary Crow, Lyle Finley and Bernice Fox. Urban wrote about them, and many others, in his 1979 book, “A History of Monmouth College.”
A prolific writer whose works include nearly two dozen books on subjects such as Eastern European history and the history of warfare, Urban was recently honored by an anonymous donor, who created The William L. Urban History Prize. It will reward student writing and is intended to go to the student who writes the top research paper in a 300-level history research course in the previous calendar year.
Among many awards he has accumulated in nearly a half-century at Monmouth, Urban received the prestigious Hatch Award for Distinguished Scholarship and Research in 2014.
