Hatch Award
Fasano honored for distinguished scholarship at Honors Convocation
Chris Fasano, Monmouth College’s Martha S. Pattee Professor of Science and chair of the physics department, received the Hatch Award for Distinguished Scholarship at the college’s annual Honors Convocation, held April 28 as part of its Scholars Day celebration.
Fasano is currently conducting research on a range of physical phenomena including the X-rays and gamma rays that are present in thunderstorms, and how to conduct crop yield modeling using data gathered from Midwest farmland. He has received grants from the U.S. Department of Energy, the National Science Foundation and Cottrell Science. A member of Monmouth’s faculty since 1998, Fasano holds both a master’s degree and Ph.D. in physics from The University of Chicago.
Wrote his nominator for the award, “Professor Fasano encourages and supports science students in a long string of additional research projects and studies accomplishing the very goal Jerry Hatch so cherished – research and scholarship that benefits Monmouth students.”
Fasano’s award recognizes excellence in research and scholarship that also benefits Monmouth students. Funded by the late 1957 Monmouth graduate W. Jerome Hatch, a retired executive for American National Can, the Hatch Awards were established in 2004 to recognize outstanding work by MC faculty in the areas of teaching and service, in addition to scholarship.
