Choral concert

MC’s Chamber Choir, Concert Choir to perform on May 5
Two Monmouth College vocal ensembles will present an end-of-year concert on May 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the Kasch Performance Hall of Dahl Chapel and Auditorium.

Free and open to the public, the performance will feature the Chamber Choir, directed by assistant professor of music Tim Pahel, and the Concert Choir, directed Dane Feenstra and accompanied by Daniel Godsil, both MC music instructors.

A group of 18 students, the Chamber Choir is the most highly select vocal ensemble at the college. It performs music that is particularly well suited to small choirs, such as challenging pieces in many parts and with close harmonies.

We perform modern, dissonant works, some vocal jazz, classical pieces, folk songs, and works from all over the world,” said Pahel. “It’s a great joy working with these students because they are so talented and quick to learn, and they are so dedicated to making music at a very high level.”

Highlights of the Chamber Choir performance will include the vocal jazz selection “Words,” by Anders Edenroth of the Real Group; “Creator alme siderum” by Richard Burchard, an expressive and ethereal piece featuring sections of Gregorian chant; a fun and entertaining arrangement of the American folk song “Listen to the Mockingbird” by Gail Kubik; and an arrangement of the Beach Boys tune “God Only Knows” by Tomas Bergquist.

The Concert Choir is a group of approximately two dozen students who love to sing and who come from all majors across the campus. They will perform a wide variety of music, including Moses Hogan’s arrangement of the spiritual “God’s Gonna Set this World on Fire”; a beautiful arrangement of “The Prayer,” by Teena Chinn; the 20th-century classic “Concord,” by Benjamin Britten; and the folk song “Song for the Mira,” which will feature solos by several choir members.
