“SOFIArt(ifacts),” an exhibition celebrating the visual and sculptural products that resulted from an innovative Monmouth College program last month, is on display in the Len G. Everett Gallery in Hewes Library through Sept. 25.

For three weeks in August, Monmouth College welcomed a select group of students to campus for Summer Opportunities for Intellectual Activities (SOFIA). The intellectual and creative research conducted during five of the nearly two dozen SOFIA projects will be on display.

A reception and gallery talk for the multidisciplinary exhibition will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 11. The participating SOFIA groups will be present to discuss their projects. The exhibit, reception and talk are free and open to the public.

Featured will be 17 works of art (large-scale paintings, prints and collages) by students in the project led by art faculty Brian Baugh and Stephanie Baugh, as well as seven astronomical photographs from the college’s new Trubeck Telescope and high-speed camera images collected by students who worked with Michael Sostarecz, associate professor of mathematics and computer science.

Assistant professor of history Christine Myers led a group that compared steampunk fiction to Victorian fact, and their portion of the exhibit displays several items of steampunk paraphernalia, including jewelry, artworks and costume pieces. Students in the forensics project led by communication studies faculty Lori Walters-Kramer and Rebecca Buel wrote speeches and examined the history of forensics at Monmouth College by exploring the archives. Examples from the archives and excerpts from famous speeches are part of the display.

Located on the second floor of Hewes Library, the Everett Gallery is open during regular library hours: Mondays through Thursdays, 7:30 a.m. to midnight; Fridays, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays, noon to midnight.
