Top scholar, athlete Decker receives senior honor, to speak at commencement
  • Senior Drake Decker of Muscatine, Iowa, is congratulated by Monmouth College president Clarence Wyatt for being named Monmouth’s Student Lincoln Laureate.
MONMOUTH, Ill. — Drake Decker, a senior from Muscatine, Iowa, is one of an elite group of Illinois college students who will be inducted Nov. 7 as a Student Lincoln Laureate by the Lincoln Academy of Illinois at the Old State Capitol in Springfield.

Each year, one outstanding senior who exhibits overall excellence in curricular and co-curricular programs is named a Student Laureate by each of the four-year, degree-granting institutions of higher learning in Illinois. Laureate are selected by the chief executive officers of their respective institutions, who also serve as Academic Trustees of The Lincoln Academy of Illinois.

“Drake is very involved in the campus community and is an outstanding role model for college students ,” said dean of students Jacquelyn Condon.

A business and economics double major, Decker has made an impact since his very first days on campus, when he received one of Monmouth’s top merit scholarships in recognition of his intellectual and leadership achievements and potential. He conducted research on the predicted movements of volatile stocks through Monmouth’s SOFIA (Summer Opportunity for the Intellectual Activity) program. As a sophomore member of the varsity golf team, Decker was awarded the prestigious NCAA Elite 89 award, given to the student-athlete with the highest GPA at each of the NCAA’s 89 recognized championships.

In addition to being an exemplary student, Decker has excelled in co-curricular activities and has served in many positions on campus, including holding executive officer roles in the Business and Economics Club and Alpha Lambda Delta honor society. He has served as publicity editor for the Midwest Journal of Undergraduate Research and also as an academic coach. He was medalist at the 2015 Midwest Conference Golf Championships and has made the league’s all-conference and academic all-conference teams.

Decker serves as the vice president for marketing for Fighting Chance Solutions, a start-up company in Muscatine. The company’s product helps protect students and teachers in an active shooter or violent intruder scenario by securing the door closer arm found on most classroom doors. Following graduation, Decker plans to pursue a career in business, with elements of marketing, branding and graphic design.

Per tradition with Monmouth’s Lincoln Laureates, Decker will address the graduating class at the 2016 commencement. At the November ceremony in Springfield, Decker and the other Student Laureates will be awarded a medallion of Lincoln, a certificate of merit and a stipend.

The Lincoln Academy, unique among the 50 states, was established in 1964 to honor Illinois’ most distinguished citizens with the state’s highest award, the Order of Lincoln. The Student Laureate program began in 1975.
