Celebrating King

The Rev. Dr. J. Herbert Nelson to speak at special MLK convocation

The Rev. Dr. J. Herbert Nelson will be the featured speaker at a special Monmouth College convocation honoring Martin Luther King Jr. on Jan. 18 at noon in Dahl Chapel. Free and open to the public, the convocation will be an extension of the weekly chapel service that is normally held at that time.

Nelson, who is well-known nationally as a speaker, preacher and peace and social justice advocate, serves as director of the Presbyterian Church (USA)’s Office of Public Witness.

The college’s office of intercultural life, chaplain’s office and the new peace, ethics and social justice program have worked with the student group Umoja and other students to plan the convocation and a service project – bagging food for Kids Against Hunger – which will be held later in the day. The convocation will also feature two gospel choirs – Monmouth’s Colorful Voices of Praise and 1Akord from Peoria.

“Last year, we had over 200 people attend our first Martin Luther King convocation, and I expect there will be many more this year,” said the Rev. Dr. Teri Ott, Monmouth’s chaplain.
