Major move

In two years, Monmouth College has jumped 20 spots in ‘U.S. News’ rankings
MONMOUTH, Ill. – Bolstered by a growing national reputation among peer schools and high school counselors, Monmouth College has jumped 20 spots in the last two years in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges.

The publication’s latest rankings were released Sept. 12. Monmouth is ranked No. 147 nationally among the guide’s “National Liberal Arts Colleges” category, 12 spots higher than last year’s position and 20 places higher than it was two years ago. Only 80 schools, less than 5 percent evaluated, increased 10 or more spots this year.

That ranking comes a week after the college jumped to No. 70 in the Washington Monthly’s College Guide and Rankings “National Universities – Liberal Arts” category, up seven spots from its 2016 ranking and an 89-spot jump over the last two years.

Also in the Washington Monthly ranking, Monmouth was rated No. 19 out of 364 colleges in the Midwest as being a school that is the “Best Bang for the Buck.”

“This continued forward momentum by Monmouth College is yet another example that the College’s national reputation continues to increase across the board,” said Monmouth College President Dr. Clarence R. Wyatt. “The College’s substantial move over the last two years is encouraging in itself. But to achieve these kinds of results during what has been a very challenging environment on both the state and national levels reflects extremely well on the strategic planning taking place at this college to build success over the long run.

“It also is a strong testament to the dedication of the entire Monmouth College family – faculty and staff, trustees, alumni, students, parents and friends.”

Monmouth saw significant increases in several categories used by editors at U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges to compile the publication’s overall rankings.

The College’s alumni giving rate now stands near 20 percent, which is above the national average in higher education. Although not considered by U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges, the percentage of Monmouth faculty and staff who give to the College is No. 1 among members of the Associated Colleges of the Midwest.

Monmouth’s reputation among peer institutions also continues to rise in the latest U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges. Its reputation score rose 8 percent among its peers, and the College’s reputation score among high school guidance counselors increased by more than 16 percent.

“These increases speak volumes about the College because those two groups understand and appreciate what is taking place at Monmouth,” said Monmouth Vice President for Enrollment Management and Communications Trent Gilbert. “Especially when your reputation improves among high school counselors, it is a sign that they believe you are the kind of college that is a good fit for some of their school’s best and brightest students.”
