Now in his 50th year at Monmouth College, emeritus history professor Bill Urban will introduce the topic “Cuba and the U.S.” at the eighth and final Great Decisions program of the semester on March 16.
Free and open to the public, the program will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Moot Board Room (Room 276) of the college’s Center for Science and Business, 720 E. Broadway. It will include approximately one hour of group discussion following Urban’s remarks.
A little over a year ago, the U.S. announced that, after decades of isolation, it has begun taking major steps to normalize relations with Cuba. The announcement marked a dramatic shift away from a policy that had its roots in one of the darkest moments of the Cold War – the Cuban missile crisis. Although the U.S. trade embargo is unlikely to end any time soon, American and Cuban leaders today are trying to bring a relationship, once defined by antithetical ideologies, into the 21st Century.
Great Decisions is a nationwide program sponsored by the Foreign Policy Association, a non-partisan, non-governmental association that works to increase Americans’ understanding of significant foreign policy issues.
