Chorale, Wind Ensemble to present their programs from Italy, Ireland
- The Monmouth College Chorale (top) will present its Italy tour program on March 18. The Monmouth Wind Ensemble (below) will present its Ireland tour program on March 20.
Two Monmouth College music ensembles that spent spring break performing in Europe will perform “home” concerts in the Kasch Performance Hall of the college’s Dahl Chapel and Auditorium.
On March 18 at 7:30 p.m., the Monmouth College Chorale, under the direction of Tim Pahel, will present the program it performed in Italy.
On March 20 at 2 p.m., the Monmouth Wind Ensemble will present its Ireland tour program. The instrumental group is directed by Matthew Wanken. Both concerts are free and open to the public.
The 52-member Chorale will open its concert with a pair of century-old selections – “Sing Joyfully” and “Ave Maria” – before transitioning to more modern works, including “Twa Tanbou” by Sydney Guillame and “Sleep” by Eric Whitacre. The performance will conclude with the college hymn, “A Flame of White and Crimson.”
The Chamber Choir, a small group of highly skilled vocalists selected from the Chorale membership and also directed by Pahel, will also perform. Among its selections will be “Fa una canzona” and “Si ch’io vorrei morire,” both by Italian composers born in the 16th century.
The Wind Ensemble will present such standards of the wind band as “Toccata for Band” and “Masque,” along with newer works, such as “Dusk” by Steven Bryant. Also on the program will be compositions inspired by traditional Celtic music – “Fantasy on a Gaelic Hymnsong” by David Holsinger and the setting of “Irish Tune from County Derry” by Percy Grainger.
In addition to American band works, the ensemble will perform “Blackwater” by Fergal Carroll, who serves as the staff conductor of the Army No. 1 Band of the Irish Defence Forces.
