Prestigious scholarship
Monmouth’s Vanderpool receives prestigious Latin scholarship
- Emma Vanderpool ’17
Emma Vanderpool, a Monmouth College junior from Frankfort, Ill., has received a $2,000 scholarship from the National Latin Exam (NLE) New Latin Educators, which awards the scholarships to students who plan to teach Latin following graduation.
“You are an extraordinary individual who promises to be an incredible Latin teacher,” wrote the scholarship committee co-chairs, Sue Robertson and Margaret Hicks, who added, “The competition for these six scholarships was extremely fierce, as all of the nominees were outstanding.”
“Emma’s enthusiasm for Latin is incredible and she promises to be an outstanding Latin teacher someday,” said Tom Sienkewicz, Monmouth’s Minnie Billings Capron Professor of Classics. “She also has incredible energy which has led her to organize, almost single-handedly, the upcoming national convention of Eta Sigma Phi,” the national classics honorary society, which Monmouth will host in April.
“I’ve had strong mentors behind me,” Vanderpool explained, crediting Sienkewicz and his faculty colleague, Kris Lorenzo, as well as her high school Latin teacher, Matthew Katsenes, a 2004 Monmouth graduate.
“I learned about Monmouth from Matt,” continued Vanderpool, who is the national vice president of Eta Sigma Phi and president of the College’s Gamma Omicron chapter. “My sophomore year, I told him I wanted to be a high school Latin teacher, and he told me the best place to come was Monmouth College and the best mentor to have was Tom Sienkewicz. I had realized I was very passionate about the subject, and seeing a teacher like Matt, who was so enthusiastic and so dedicated to his students, was very impactful. Since that time, my desire to teach Latin has only been strengthened by the tutelage of Dr. Sienkewicz.”
As a scholarship recipient, Vanderpool is invited to attend the American Classical League (ACL) Institute in Austin, Texas, in June, sponsored by the National Latin Exam. The institute offers thought-provoking sessions on ancient authors, technology, and pedagogy, and promotes camaraderie with other Latin and Greek language instructors.
Vanderpool is eligible to renew the scholarship for the 2016-17 academic year.
