Relay For Life

For first time, April 2 cancer research fundraiser will be town-gown venture
The annual Relay For Life at Monmouth College will be held on April 2 beginning at 2 p.m. in the fieldhouse of the Huff Athletic Center. Various activities, games and performances will take place throughout the event which, for the first time, will be held as a joint venture between the College and the local Warren County community.

Each year, more than four million people in more than 20 countries raise much-needed funds and awareness to save lives from cancer through the Relay For Life movement.

“Cancer touches almost everyone in one shape or another,” said Amanda Louck-Campbell, a 2002 Monmouth graduate, who is part of the event leadership team. The vice president and CFO of Midwest Bank said she has participated in Relay For Life for the past 15 years, adding, “It has been great combining the two committees and events to have one successful event, and being able to use the wonderful facilities of Monmouth College is an added benefit. We can’t wait for Saturday, and we hope that our belief in Relay shines bright for all of our participants and survivors that attend.”

Events scheduled throughout the afternoon and evening will include a welcome by Monmouth College president Clarence R. Wyatt and First Lady Lobie Stone at 2 p.m. and performances by Monmouth College’s Sassy Lassies at 4 p.m. and the Colorful Voices of Praise at 8 p.m. Also, College employees Stephanie Kinkaid and Dick Johnston will share their personal experiences with cancer at 2:30 p.m. and 8 p.m., respectively.

A survivor celebration is scheduled for 6 p.m., and a Luminaria Ceremony will be held at 9 p.m. The ceremony will light up the fieldhouse’s indoor track, honoring those who have been lost to cancer, as well as those who are battling the disease and those who have overcome it.

To honor a loved one with a Luminaria, submit a form online at www.monmouthcollege.edu/relay.

The event will conclude with a dance party from 10 to 11 p.m.

Food vendors at Relay For Life will include Buffalo Wild Wings, Eddie B’s Ribs and Grill and Alfano’s Pizza.

“The entire Colleges Against Cancer student organization at Monmouth is excited to team up with the Warren County community for the first time to help fight this deadly disease,” said Monmouth staff member and 2013 graduate, Kevin Lindsay, who is also part of the leadership team. “We hope that seeing the passion and commitment that the community members have shown for this cause over the last 20 years will help reignite the passion in our students, especially those in service groups and in fraternity and sorority life.”
