Very Live Band
Group fronted by Glenn Brooks ’61 to present very live concert April 23
One of Monmouth College’s well-known musical alums is trying to help bring music to local kids. Glenn Brooks, who fronts The Very Live Band, will return to his alma mater for a benefit concert at 7 p.m. April 23 in the Kasch Performance Hall of Dahl Chapel and Auditorium.
The Very Live Band’s performance is free and open to the public, but a free-will offering will be taken for a new music program in Monmouth that provides music opportunities and counseling for local children. The community service program is offered under the umbrella of the AmeriCorps VISTA program.
Brooks, who founded the Very Live Band, has performed with such stars as the O’Jays, Linda Ronstadt, Etta James and The Fifth Dimension.
“Music has given me a tremendous amount … and allowed me to travel many different places,” said Brooks, a member of the M Club Hall of Fame for his days as a standout track and field performer for the Fighting Scots. “It has opened the doors to life, and I hope it will do the same for these kids.”
Students who reach certain criteria, including doing well in school and participating in junior high band, will receive free instruments.
“We are asking the community for help to stockpile a musical library,” said Brooks, who said that donations of instruments can be made at two Monmouth churches – St. James AME and Faith United Presbyterian.
Brooks will be joined onstage by trumpet player Rahmlee Davis, drummer Buddy Williams and Steve Robbins, who plays the piano and keyboard. Davis is also a member the Brooks Brothers Band, which features Glenn and his brother, Chris Brooks, a 1972 Monmouth graduate.
To reserve seats, concert-goers can pick up free tickets at the Stockdale Center office or email stockdale@monmouthcollege.edu.
