Golden Scots Celebration
Many special events planned as alumni return to campus June 2-5
Alumni reflect on their years as undergraduates at Monmouth College’s Golden Scots Celebration.
Alumni who graduated from Monmouth College in 1971 or earlier will return to campus June 2-5 to participate in the sixth annual Golden Scots Celebration. Nearly 150 alumni and friends have registered for the event.
Among the weekend’s events are special reunions for the 45th, 50th, 55th and 60th anniversary classes. Other highlights includes: seminars led by faculty and alumni; campus tours; a dance; and a traditional chapel service.
“With nearly 150 alumni and friends returning to Monmouth College, this is our largest Golden Scots Celebration to date,” said director of alumni engagement Hannah Maher. “We have put together an event-packed weekend that everyone can enjoy, thanks in large part to the help of our hard-working reunion committees.”
Activities begin June 2, when alumni may check into their air-conditioned dorm rooms from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Activities that day include tours of campus, the new Pi Beta Phi house and the Educational Garden, and a program on Abraham Lincoln’s experiences in and around Monmouth. The day will conclude with a kick-off dinner, an evening social and an opportunity for star-gazing in the Adolphson Observatory.
Events on June 3 include a Q&A session with senior administrative staff, as well as presentations about Theodore Roosevelt, Monmouth’s changing landscape, the Arab Spring and the impact of the arts. Attendees will also have the opportunity to tour the Alpha Xi Delta house. The evening program features a progressive dinner and a social.
On June 4, Golden Scots will have the opportunity to tour campus and to visit the historic founding sites of the Monmouth Duo – Pi Beta Phi and Kappa Kappa Gamma women’s fraternities. Programs that day include talks by Monmouth’s international students; a panel discussion by women on “Caught Between Tradition and Liberation” in the mid-1960s; information about a “pico” brewery startup in Monmouth; and “Bringing Back a Hero,” which will feature Bob Jornlin ’61 detailing the mission he led to return a World War II LST ship to the United States from Greece, accompanied by a crew of WWII veterans.
The day’s schedule will end with reunion dinners for the classes of 1956, 1961, 1966 and 1971, followed by a “Boogie Fever” dance event and an evening social.
The Golden Scots weekend will conclude June 5 with a memorial service for deceased alumni, based on a traditional Monmouth College chapel service, featuring an alumni choir.
