Welcome back

One month after graduating, Graf returns to alma mater for admission post
  • Recent graduate Julianna Graf is excited to share her “great experience” with high school students considering Monmouth College.
Julianna Graf wants others to have the kind of “great experience” she had as a Monmouth College student.

Graf, who graduated in May, has been hired as an admission counselor at her alma mater. She will work with students and families from Illinois communities that include Bloomington-Normal, Springfield and Champaign. Her territory will also come close to her hometown of Mascoutah, Ill., just outside of St. Louis.

“I knew about Monmouth because my brother, Sam (’11), graduated from here, and my dad and grandpa also attended,” said Graf, who was a communication studies and public relations double major. “I liked the small, community feel, and I liked that I could make connections with my professors and not just be a number in a seat.”

Graf’s involvement while a student and passion for the College made her a natural choice to serve in admission.

“Julianna was very active on campus,” said Associate Vice President for Admission Nick Spaeth. “We are excited to welcome her to the team and are confident that her past experiences will serve her well in recruiting and enrolling future classes of Monmouth College students.”

Early in her Monmouth career, Graf gained first-hand experience of a Monmouth professor who went the extra mile to work with students.

“My first semester, I had a class with Dicky J (business professor Dick Johnston),” she said. “The whole class was in the library at about 10 or 11 o’clock at night, studying for our first exam. We got to a question we just didn’t understand, so we called him at home, and he not only answered, but he came to the library to help us out. We basically got an extra class that night. Monmouth professors really will take time out of their day to help.”

That type of assistance extended through Graf’s senior year, when she leaned on professors in the communication studies department, such as Joe Angotti. Graf, who served as editor of the student newspaper and executive producer of MC-TV, said Angotti was especially helpful when she began transitioning from college student to young professional.

As high school students prepare for their own transitions, Graf will help educate them about the next step. She said it will be similar to how she explained the advantages of attending Monmouth to her friends and family in Mascoutah.

“I’ll be sharing with them the importance of a liberal arts education, and how you get the opportunity to have so many experiences at a smaller school,” said Graf, who also minored in journalism and business. “I’ll be putting Monmouth College in front of the students and sharing the value of coming to college here.”

Graf said she also looks forward to learning more about Monmouth.

“I had such a great experience here, and now I get to see more behind the scenes and understand better what makes this place work,” she said. “Everyone has been great about introducing me to my job. I’m excited to come to work every day.”
