McGaan to be recognized for excellence in teaching
Professor Lee McGaan
Monmouth College communication studies professor Lee McGaan will receive the Hatch Academic Excellence Award for Distinguished Teaching at the Alumni Impact Awards on Sept. 30, part of Homecoming weekend festivities at the College.
McGaan will be honored, along with several other award recipients, at 6 p.m. in Mellinger Commons in the Center for Science and Business.
McGaan has been part of the fabric of Monmouth College since 1965, first as a student and then as a 30-year faculty member. He plans to retire next spring. An early career in the military and a doctorate in organizational communication provided him with a unique perspective for teaching liberal arts communication studies.
Rather than easing into retirement, McGaan continues to develop community engagement opportunities for students while also promoting institutional support, resources and infrastructure for civic engagement.
McGaan received multiple nominations for the award, with one faculty member writing: “His commitment to his students and the institution is something we can all aspire to.”
A Monmouth alumnus wrote: “I will never forget the lessons, teachings and counseling he provided for Sigma Phi Epsilon and for me,” referring to McGaan’s service as a chapter adviser for the men’s fraternity.
