Leadership leader
McLean takes on new role as he begins second year on staff
When Jake McLean ’15 was a Monmouth College student, he took advantage of numerous leadership opportunities at the liberal arts college.
Now the Monmouth alumnus will oversee a new leadership program at the College.
McLean has been named the College’s assistant director of leadership development. One of his primary responsibilities is overseeing the Stockdale Fellows Program, a new leadership initiative named in honor of Vice Admiral James Stockdale ’46 and his wife, Sybil.
“Stockdale Fellows will be part of the premier leadership program on campus,” said McLean. “Twelve first-time freshmen were selected, and I will also work with two returning students (Maggie Brundige ’17 of Elburn, Ill., and Alec Dutko ’17 of Streator, Ill.) to facilitate programming.”
McLean said Brundige and Dutko will also help him with “the other main arm” of Monmouth’s leadership programming, Scots Aspire.
“Our students will continue to do everything they’ve been doing to be involved – campus organizations, community service and internships, for example – as well as educational leadership training,” he said. “What Scots Aspire provides is a way to track that involvement, giving students who sign up to be a part of it a full cocurricular résumé.”
McLean had a full résumé of involvement when he was a student. He was president of the Associated Students of Monmouth College, the College’s student government organization; he was a founding member of Rotoract; he was active in residence life and his fraternity, Zeta Beta Tau; and he served as a Scot Ambassador. He’s been a member of the Monmouth staff since August 2015. “Monmouth College really jump-started my leadership journey and my commitment to community service,” McLean said. “Really, everything I’ve been doing as a professional at Monmouth is an extension of what I did as a student. What better way for me to pay back that experience than to help our current generation of students on their own leadership journey?”
