‘Scots on Broadway’ is theme of Sept. 30-Oct. 2 weekend
There will be a lot of “Scots on Broadway” when Monmouth College hosts its annual Homecoming weekend, Sept. 30-Oct. 2.
The weekend will include three award ceremonies, a parade and a Fighting Scots football game. This year’s theme is “Scots on Broadway.”
All Monmouth College alumni are invited to return for the weekend, which will include reunions for the classes of 1976, 1981, 1986, 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006, 2011 and 2016.
At 3 p.m. Sept. 30, a program celebrating the 20th anniversary of the College’s Wackerle Career & Leadership Center will be held in the Morgan Room of Poling Hall. Created through the vision and generosity of renowned executive search consultant Fred Wackerle ’61, the center was dedicated at Monmouth’s 1996 Homecoming.
The induction of scientist Karin Loya ’63 and MTV co-founder Dwight Tierney ’69 into the Hall of Achievement – the highest honor Monmouth College bestows upon its graduates – will be part of the Alumni Impact Award ceremony at 6 p.m. Sept. 30 in Mellinger Commons in the Center for Science and Business.
Other alumni award winners that will be announced include: retired college president William Simpson ’65, Distinguished Alumnus; emeritus professor Harlow Blum, Distinguished Service; University of Iowa professor Scott Shaw ’03, Young Alumnus; and the Brooks family, Family of the Year. Communication studies professor Lee McGaan will be presented with the College’s Hatch Award for Distinguished Teaching.
Also on Sept. 30:
The Homecoming parade on East Broadway between 6th Street and 9th Street, will begin at 11 a.m. Sponsored by the College’s Association for Student Activity Programming, it will include the Monmouth College Pipe Band and Fighting Scots Marching Band. Last year’s Homecoming king and queen will also ride in the parade, as will the 2016 Homecoming court, the M Club Hall of Fame inductees, alumni award recipients and the 40-, 35-, 30-, 25- and 20-year reunion classes.
At 11:30 a.m., the College will host its second Fraternity and Sorority Alumni Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Mellinger Commons in the Center for Science and Business. Slated to receive acceptance into the Hall of Fame are Melinda Fry ’03, Benjamin Hickerson ’05 and the late Mary MacDill Knapheide ’35 and Isabel Bickett Marshall ’36.
The Homecoming football game against Cornell College will kick off at 1 p.m. at Zorn Stadium. In other Fighting Scots action, the volleyball team will host Beloit at 1 p.m. in Glennie Gymnasium, and the men’s and women’s soccer team will play a doubleheader at Knox College, with the men’s game kicking off at 1 p.m. The volleyball and baseball teams will both host alumni events over the weekend.
Immediately following the football game, an alumni and faculty social will be a held in Hewes Library. Reunion class celebrations will be held at 5:30 p.m. at various locations.

- A new alumni and friends social will be held in Market Alley in downtown Monmouth. Serving will begin at 7 p.m. and music by The Brooks Brothers-The Very Live Band will begin at 8 p.m.
- The traditional Homecoming spirit shout at April Zorn Memorial Stadium will begin at 8 p.m. The celebration, which will feature competition by student organizations and the introduction of Homecoming royalty, will conclude with a fireworks display.
- At 9 p.m., weather-permitting, a star-gazing event will be held in the Adolphson Observatory atop the Center for Science and Business. Participants, who are asked to meet in the building’s Veterans Memorial Great Room on the second floor, will view the night sky through the College’s 20-inch Trubeck Telescope.
