Monmouth makes move

College rises 82 spots in respected Washington Monthly rankings
Monmouth College has experienced one of the largest jumps in the respected Washington Monthly’s College Guide and Rankings.

The liberal arts college moved 82 spots to No. 77 in the magazine’s “National Universities – Liberal Arts” category. The magazine ranked 239 liberal arts colleges and universities in its latest issue.

“This is an important recognition of Monmouth College’s academic and co-curricular excellence,” said Monmouth College President Dr. Clarence R. Wyatt. “This national honor is also a testament to the extraordinarily talented faculty and staff who work every day to make Monmouth a place where the liberating arts empower students to change lives and make a difference in the world.”

Since 2005, Washington Monthly has ranked colleges based on how they educate students and how they benefit society. The publication measures a college’s success in three key areas – students’ social mobility (admitting and graduating low-income students); community service; and students who engage in research and go on to earn a doctorate.

More than one-third of Monmouth’s students are the first in their families to attend college, and about half of the College’s students qualify to receive a federal Pell grant, which is awarded to students from families with greater financial need.

“Monmouth is proud to be a college of high-opportunity,” Wyatt said. “We provide life-changing opportunities to students from all backgrounds, and we have one of the most diverse student bodies among our peers.”

Monmouth Vice President for Enrollment and Communications Trent Gilbert said the liberal arts college’s emphasis on hands-on learning and a close connection between faculty and students have attracted increased attention from prospective families.

“Students want to attend a college where they will have a living-learning experience that extends beyond the classroom and prepares them for a career in an ever-changing world,” Gilbert said.

Monmouth offers students myriad undergraduate research opportunities, including: the innovative Triads in Global Food Security and Global Public Health; the Summer Opportunity for Intellectual Activity (SOFIA); the prestigious endowed Kieft Scholars in chemistry and biochemistry; and the peer-reviewed Midwest Journal of Undergraduate Research.

Monmouth psychology professor Marsha Dopheide said it is “exciting and invigorating to work at an institution that encourages experiential learning opportunities.”

Dopheide taught in this year’s SOFIA, which allows select freshmen to come to campus early to make connections with peers and professors.

“My students and I became close quickly, and I still get to see them now that the semester is underway as they swing by my office regularly,” said Dopheide, who also chairs the College’s Faculty Senate. “It’s opportunities like these that allow us to work closely with students across different disciplines, doing something that we are passionate about, that makes me love working at Monmouth College.”

Dopheide said Monmouth’s approach to the liberal arts helps it stand out in higher education.

“So much self-discovery happens at Monmouth College, and not just in terms of academic abilities,” Dopheide said. “We take the liberal arts very seriously and encourage students to integrate their knowledge from different disciplines to fulfill their social responsibilities. We encourage students to explore their belief system and their values. We encourage students to discover new interests both in and out of the classroom, on campus and through semesters spent volunteering, interning, or studying abroad. The wide range of learning opportunities at Monmouth ensures that our students will graduate confident and prepared for rich personal and professional lives—for leadership, citizenship and service in a global context.”
