Gamer ’60 speaks to Monmouth political science class
  • Robert Gamer ’60 talks with Monmouth College students about China.
Monmouth College students learned about China recently from an expert on the Asian nation.

Monmouth alumnus Robert Gamer ’60 told students that while China has recently experienced some sluggish economic times, it remains a major player on the world stage.

“In terms of PPP (purchasing power parity), in the next five years, China might well surpass us,” Gamer told students Sept. 23 in Professor Farhat Haq’s “Comparative Politics” class.

Gamer reminded the students that China was once very far ahead of Europe because it abandoned feudalism about 2,000 years before it ended in the West. About one-third of the world’s trade used to come from China, with another third from India.

“Then they conquered China, at least to the extent of its trade,” Gamer said of the Western world.

Today, China is experiencing a resurgence, with growth of 6 percent or greater in its Gross Domestic Product almost every year for the past 20 years. But Gamer told the students that the outlook is not bad in the United States, either.

“China is not surpassing the capacity the United States has to ramp up. … We don’t see how something is working well, partly because both presidential campaigns are telling us it’s not,” he said.

An emeritus professor of political science at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, Gamer followed in the footsteps of his father, Carl, who taught political science at Monmouth from 1946-65.

At UMKC, Gamer’s specialties include comparative politics, politics in developing nations and Chinese politics. One of his books, Understanding Contemporary China, is in its fourth edition. He is working on revisions for a fifth edition of the text, which was written primarily for introduction to China courses.

Gamer’s other publications include Governments and Politics in a Changing World and The Developing Nations: A Comparative Perspective.

Gamer told the Monmouth students that they are at an advantage by attending a liberal arts college.

“It makes a difference to know something about the culture of a place, so you know how things might react,” he said. “A business school might not teach you the culture.”
