Safety Practices

One of our enduring values is social responsibility; that is, acting for the benefit of society at large.

Consistent with this value, all campus community members are asked to be considerate of others on campus and to consistently participate in the safety practices described below, as they are intended to help keep our campus safe.

Face masks student life with masks

For the health of us all, we have developed a uniform mask policy for our campus community. Students, faculty, staff, contracted services personnel and visitors are required to wear a face mask in public settings on campus, including common workspaces, hallways, elevators, dining facilities, restrooms, breakrooms, meeting rooms, residence halls, College vehicles, and while in class whether those are indoors or in outdoor areas designated for teaching.

Exceptions to this requirement include:

  • While you are alone in your private workspace.
  • While you are in your assigned residence hall room.
  • While you are appropriately social distancing and seated at a table, eating in a dining service area.
  • While you are outside and able to maintain social distancing of at least six feet.
  • While participating in certain co-curricular activities such as with a sports team or instrumental music ensemble when wearing a mask is not practicable.
  • When it is determined by a supervisor that wearing a face mask prohibits your ability to do specific job duties.

You should have a mask with you at all times to allow you to comply with the face mask requirement as situations change.

If an employee cannot wear a face mask/covering because of medical or other reasons, the Director of Personnel, Mike McNall, should be contacted. If a student cannot wear a face mask/covering due to medical or other reasons, the Student Success and Accessibility Services Office should be contacted for possible accommodations.


Social distancing student life with masks

Employees on campus are expected to maintain appropriate social distancing in order to avoid being exposed to or spreading COVID-19. To that end, the College has implemented the following social-distancing/separation measures:

  • Many employees will alternate scheduling to include working remotely and allow staggered on-site staffing patterns.
  • Employees should maintain at least a distance of 6 feet (about two-arm’s length) from other people at all times;
  • Employees should avoid crowded places and avoid mass gatherings;
  • Employees should refrain from entering other employees’ offices and cubicles, utilizing electronic communication, where possible.
  • Dining offerings and locations may vary in accordance with COVID-19 restrictions. More information: monmouthcollege.campusdish.com. Meal schedules will be adjusted to reduce numbers served at any one time. When dining in one of the food service areas on campus, you should wear your mask or face covering until you are ready to eat and then replace it afterward. Allow at least six feet of distance between each other, including standing in lines and in seating arrangements. To assist with social distancing in dining halls, furniture has been removed and additional signage, floor markings and stanchions will be utilized. People are encouraged to take food back to their office area or residence hall room or eat outside, when possible. As face masks are required in all buildings, food and beverages should not be consumed in common areas inside academic buildings.
  • Signs will be placed throughout in every campus building, including on display boards, at time clocks, and in other highly visible locations. This signage will include CDC guidelines and other safe practices.
  • Plexiglas will be installed at dining services cashier locations. Additional Plexiglas barriers may be installed in other high-traffic areas.
  • Additional signage will be posted in all public places on campus, both interior and some exterior. This includes elevators, restrooms, conference rooms, lounges, and other places where individuals can congregate, as well as entry ways, benches and other exterior gathering places. Signage will encourage social distancing and include capacity limitations.
  • Additional floor markings will be placed at locations where lines or groups potentially can form or need to form in order to facilitate social distancing.
  • Physical spaces (e.g., classrooms, conference rooms, restrooms, break rooms, etc.) were analyzed and reset to promote social distancing will still complying with any applicable building code requirements.
  • Additional measures may be implemented by the supervisor of an assigned work area.

Personal sanitation measures

Students, faculty and staff should maintain good personal sanitation/hygiene, keeping the following in mind:

  • Frequent hand-washing is the first line of defense against the spread of COVID-19. Everyone should wash their hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after being in a public place, or after coughing, sneezing, blowing their nose, or touching their face. If soap and water are not readily available, everyone should use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
  • Everyone is encouraged to carry their own hand sanitizer and keep some at their work stations. Large bottles of hand sanitizer are available around campus to refill your personal container.
  • Everyone is encouraged to bring their own water. Campus water fountains will be turned off until COVID-19 restrictions have been reduced. The hands-free, bottle-filling stations will still be available.
  • Everyone should minimize or avoid sharing personal items and work supplies with others.

In addition, the College has implemented the following measures to encourage people on the College’s campus to practice good sanitation/hygiene:

  • Hand sanitizer will be available in various campus locations.
  • Gloves will be made available to employees based on category of employment and job duties.
  • Hand-washing and hygiene posters have been displayed in various locations around campus, including in academic buildings, administrative buildings and residence halls.
  • Supervisors will continue to remind employees of good hygiene practices, such as:
    • Frequent hand-washing;
    • Covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue, then throwing the tissue in the trash; if a tissue is unavailable, the cough or sneeze should be covered with the inside of an elbow and not the hands;
    • Avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth;
    • Cleaning frequently touched surfaces often; and
    • Keeping tissues and hand sanitizers easily accessible.
  • Additional measures may be implemented by the supervisor of an assigned work area.
  • Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to get flu vaccinations, as appropriate to their other health conditions. Flu vaccinations will be available on campus on Tuesday, September 15.

Cleaning and disinfecting protocols

Employees and departments will be expected to assist with cleaning their workspaces and other high-touch surface areas in their physical work environments. Cleaner and disinfectant will be provided in high-traffic areas, as needed.

As it relates to cleaning and disinfecting the campus, the College has implemented the following protocols:

  • Deep cleaning of all residence halls and academic buildings, as well as other campus facilities, will occur at regular intervals, based on occupancy and use.
  • Open buildings will be cleaned and disinfected on a daily basis at regular intervals, and as necessary, based on occupancy and use.
  • Cleaning and disinfecting of high-touch surface areas (such as controls, door handles, elevator panels, railings, copy machines, etc.) will occur on a regular basis.
  • Students, faculty and staff should take classroom trash (except in laboratory classrooms) and office trash to one of the central locations in each academic building.
  • Faculty and Staff who require routine cleaning or maintenance (light bulbs replaced, etc.) of a private office or classroom should contact the maintenance department by generating an online work order or calling 309-457-3333.
  • Disinfecting sprayer will be utilized where appropriate, such as in locker rooms, shower areas, shuttle buses, etc.
  • Additional cleaning measures will be taken if the College is notified that an individual is/was on campus with a positive diagnosis of COVID-19.
  • Additional measures may be implemented by a supervisor of an assigned work area.
