Backyard History

Gr. 3-5
Dig into the history of old homes and local cemeteries while learning about local history. We will discover how “our history” and that of our community is as interesting and challenging as what you might learn in a history book. We’ll do some exploring around the Monmouth College campus and the neighborhood.

Baseball Fun

Would you like to learn more about the history of baseball? Do you know how baseball started and how it was played more than 100 years ago? You will learn the early rules and play by those rules—no gloves back then! We will learn how baseball has grown and changed over the years. Play Ball!

Civil War Adventures

Gr. 5-8
Do you have a fascination with events in American history such as the Civil War? In this class you will learn how historians study the Civil War with actual letters and photographs, play some really fun games that children played during this time, and discover how Hollywood gets it right and wrong when portraying the Civil War on film. Election Day (NEW)

Gr. 4-8
Exercise your right to vote! In this class we will learn about how the legislative system works. Using an election simulation, we will investigate how candidates get nominated, campaigns are run, and how debates occur, as well as how the election process works and the importance of voting. We will culminate our experience with our own debate and election.

Take a road trip across America in Just two short weeks! This class will take you on the road trip of a life time! As we cross the United States we will “stop” in several different cities. Through research and exploration, we will learn about the history, landforms, places of interest, what an area is known for, and so much more. Who knows, maybe you will be in charge of your next family vacation.

In the TV show Doctor Who, the Doctor and his companions travel thru time and space and meet all sorts of real people from history. In this class we will look at some of the important historical figures that the Doctor has met and talk about how the show presents these historic personalities.
